VETRO FiberMap Takes on Silicon Valley at TechCrunch Disrupt

October 2, 2019 - October 4, 2019

Techcrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, California.

VETRO FiberMap was selected by Maine Startups Insider as one of eight locally-founded startups to represent Maine at this October’s TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, California. Since 2011, TechCrunch Disrupt has been discovering and launching startup companies by bringing together the brightest minds in tech. The event is a three day trade show engineered to pair venture capitalists with compelling startup funding opportunities, and is considered legendary is Silicon Valley for having connected Dropbox, Fitbit and Mint (recently acquired by Quickbooks) with the capital they needed to achieve their next level of success.

How does VETRO FiberMap accomplish this from their cozy headquarters in a historic building in the heart of Portland, Maine? By making killer software. The VETRO FiberMap platform is a groundbreaking, cloud-native, fiber optic management software suite, developed to meet the needs of organizations designing and building the next generation of internet infrastructure.

VETRO was formed in 2008 by partners Sean Myers and Will Mitchell, who both came from a background in geography, mapping, and GIS (Geographic Information Systems – the same technology they use for Google Maps, Uber and the developing autonomous vehicle industry). The company was originally founded as a services firm that created robust mapping tools for a wide range of businesses, but Will and Sean found their shared niche building software for broadband network design, and in 2016 decided to focus all of their resources on the development of their newly conceived platform.

Three years later, VETRO’s platform has been adopted by broadband providers, engineering firms and municipalities around the world to design, plan, build, manage and sell their fiber optic and wireless offerings. VETRO is being used to bring the “fourth utility” to rural and developing regions, as well as by providers with existing networks who rely on VETRO to compete efficiently with the top tier ISPs. VETRO FiberMap’s impact can already be seen in 18 countries across five continents, helping deliver broadband connectivity to underserved global markets.

Maine has long been a state with a rich GIS economy, as this technology is used often in environmental and geological work. The VETRO team is looking forward to being one of the first tech companies to exhibit at Disrupt in its eight year history, showcasing Maine’s growing tech economy and our home state’s talents beyond pulling lobsters from Casco Bay.

VETRO FiberMap will be exhibiting at the Maine Pavilion in Startup Alley October 2nd-4th at TechCrunch Disrupt—keep an eye on Maine Startup Insider for an upcoming profile of VETRO Co-Founders Sean Myers and Will Mitchell.
