The Dollars are in the Details: Fiber Monetization Strategies for Fiber Broadband Leaders
In our competitive market, Fiber Operators face big challenges balancing demand, growth and quality of service to achieve optimized profitability. Speed, latency, reliability and future-readiness are just the basic ingredients for attracting and retaining customers.
If you’re growing your fiber business, you might be thinking about how to move fast while preventing mistakes, or ensuring the best customer experience with a team stretched-thin by ongoing projects. You might be thinking about adding new product offerings to new verticals in your area to monetize some surplus inventory, or partnering up with other operators to reach new markets.
The Trouble with New Fiber Networks
What most of us aren’t thinking about when we consider optimizing for monetization is things like cables and splitters – but we should be. Fiber is unique. Physical connections to the customer location are non-negotiable in maintaining integrity from A to Z, and unlike with older telecom networks, fiber operators might still be working out some of the kinks in their networks post-build while providing service to new markets at the same time. Plus, it’s not always easy to keep track of available capacity once a cable goes into the ground.
Service interruptions, inaccurate quotes during the sales cycle and other little frictions can make or break your long-term relationship with any community you serve, especially if the market is new. Stories of customers, partners or investors feeling unintentionally misled or receiving poor service can spread far and wide. So the question is, how do you want your stories to end: with happy stakeholders validating your endeavors in the market, or with the competition eating your lunch?
Confronting the Fiber Optic Elephant in the Room
No single strategy for ensuring success fits all, but in our current landscape, operators who aren’t actively applying monetization strategies to their networks at the infrastructure level won’t be able to win, or in some cases, survive, against those who are. At the point of sale, networks that haven’t been cared for with monetization in mind won’t be worth as much to the buyer.
What if we shift our thinking? What would happen if we put the focus on expanding product lines by monetizing dark fiber, or introducing partnerships with other operators? If we acknowledge that accuracy and visibility of your network directly affects your ability to profit? That a network managed well from the bottom up means more accurate costing and quotes and enables a world of opportunities like buying and selling connectivity, supporting middle mile and reaching new customers of every size and shape?
